Dumbledore's Army

In Harry's fifth year, the trio began a group known as Dumbledore's Army in order to learn Defense Against the Dark Arts. These fellow Hogwartians are some of Harry's most important allies, and deserve their own spotlight.

Neville Longbottom

Neville is the forgetful boy Harry met on the Hogwarts Express. Neville comes from a pureblood family and was raised by his grandmother. His parents were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange. An odd connection exists between Harry and Neville as Neville could have been the boy spoken of in the prophecy regarding Voldemort. Neville's parents, like Harry's, had defied Voldemort three times. And, he was born at the end of July. Yet, Voldemort did not go after Neville, and instead went after Harry.

Neville may not have seemed like the typical Gryffindor when school first began. But he was unafraid to stand up to the trio when he thought they were only going to get Gryffindor into more trouble. In their fifth year, Neville believed Harry (and Dumbledore's) story of Voldemort's return. He eagerly joined the D.A. that same year, and flourished. Neville, Luna and Ginny joined the trio in their journey to the Ministry of Magic, where Harry believed Sirius was being held by Voldemort. Neville showed great bravery, and fought alongside Harry even after the others had been seriously injured. That same bravery made itself clear when Death Eaters invaded Hogwarts in Neville's sixth year. He and Luna were the only two D.A. members to respond to the trio's call, and they fought valiantly.

Neville's finest hour came in his seventh year. Neville LongbottomSince he is a pureblood, he was allowed to return to Hogwarts. There, he, Ginny and Luna continued the D.A. Neville sustained many injuries from standing up to the Death Eaters that taught in the school. Towards the end of the year, the Death Eater's patience had worn thin. Neville managed to escape to the Room of Requirement, and from that base was able to gather more and more allies.

Finally, on the night of the final battle, Neville proved beyond any doubt that he was a true Gryffindor when he pulled Godric's own sword from the Sorting Hat (much like Harry had done in the Chamber of Secrets). He killed Nagini, thus destroying the final Horcrux.

Just the facts:
  • First met Harry aboard the Hogwarts Express when he was looking for his frog, Trevor.
  • Stood up to Harry, Hermione and Ron when they were going to chase after the Sorcerer's Stone.
  • Harry learned of the fate of Neville's parents through Dumbledore in his fourth year. He promised not to speak of it to Neville or anyone.
  • The trio came across Neville in Saint Mungo's Hospital at Christmas during their first year. He was visiting his parents.
  • Harry passed on the mission of killing Nagini to Neville before he went to face Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest.

Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood is a bit eccentric, and as such, it took some time for Harry to really warm up to her. Luna LovegoodBut she has proved time and time again to be a true friend. Through her father's magazine, The Quibbler, Harry's story of the night Voldemort returned was finally published for everyone to read. She also came with Harry (and others) to the Ministry of Magic because Harry believed Sirius was in trouble. After Sirius' death, Luna was really the only one who understood and could comfort Harry about his loss.

Their friendship grew in Harry's sixth year (Luna's fifth) as Harry even invited her to one of Professor Slughorn's parties. Luna, along with Neville Longbottom, were the only D.A. members to respond to the call for help the night Hogwarts was invaded by Death Eaters. Luna, Neville and Ginny continued the D.A. at Hogwarts the next year, with the trio absent. They did their best to undermine Snape's authority, even attempting to steal the sword of Gryffindor from Snape's office.

However, during the holidays, Luna was taken by the Death Eaters to be used to threaten her father into no longer publishing damaging stories in The Quibbler. She was locked away in a cellar in Malfoy Manor with Mr. Ollivander. She was rescued by Harry and the others and taken to Ron's brother's house. When the final battle began, she was summoned by Neville to return to Hogwarts. She fought just as bravely as anyone else, and even saved Harry's life at one point when he was no longer able to cast the Patronus Charm.

Luna's true and honest perception is one of her most admirable personality traits. She alone saw that Harry wanted nothing more to be away from everyone after Voldemort was defeated. In her unique way, she distracted everyone and allowed Harry to slip away unnoticed under the Invisibility Cloak.

Just the facts:
  • Is a year younger then Harry.
  • Luna, along with Harry, could hear voices behind the veil in the Department of Mysteries.
  • Lost her mother when she was nine, which gave her the experience to help comfort Harry.
  • Always supported the Gryffindor Quidditch team, except when Ravenclaw was playing.
  • Was very kind to Dobby when he died, even giving a eulogy when Harry couldn't speak the words himself.

Other Members

These are some of the other members of the Dumbledore's Army that don't already have their own space on another page.
  • Colin and Dennis Creevy
Colin Creevy is a year younger then Harry and is very much a fan. He was one of the victims of the basilisk. His brother Dennis is two years younger then Colin. They both joined the D.A. from the beginning. Colin came back to Hogwarts for the final battle, and though McGonagall tried to make him leave, he stayed. He was later killed by a Death Eater.
  • Seamus Finnigan
Seamus is a Gryffindor in Harry's same year. These two have had their ups and downs, and Seamus outright abandoned him in their fifth year by not believing Harry's story about Voldemort's return. Things changed after The Quibbler interview, and Seamus joined the Dumbledore's Army soon after. Seamus apparently went to Hogwarts for his seventh year, and had taken to hiding in the Room of Requirement with the others. He also participated in the final battle.
  • Dean Thomas
Dean is another Gryffindor in Harry's year. He was generally more supportive of Harry then Seamus, though Seamus is his best friend. He was forced to go on the run in what would have been his seventh year of Hogwarts. Dean eventually ended up at Malfoy Manor but escaped with Harry, Luna and the others. He returned to Hogwarts to fight with the others at the last battle.
  • Parvati and Padma Patil
Parvati is a fellow Gryffindor in Harry's year. She was actually his date for the Yule Ball in their fourth year. Padma is her identical twin, but is in Ravenclaw. She, along with her sister, joined the D.A. from the outset. They both also fought in the final battle at Hogwarts.
